Parish History

The efforts to establish a Catholic Church in Burkburnett began in 1953 with the organization of CCD classes for Catholic children. These classes were held in homes and conducted by volunteers from Sacred Heart Parish in Wichita Falls. As attendance grew, the American Legion Hall and St. John the Divine Episcopal Church offered the use of their facilities for religious education. In 1958 adult church members formed the St. Boniface Study Club. In addition to their study-oriented activities, the members started a building fund and held money raising projects. This club was the foundation of Catholic growth and activity in northern Wichita County.
In 1965, Permian Oil Company donated a tract of seven acres fronting on Davey Drive to the group. On October 15 of the same year, Monsignor Vincent P. Micola of Sacred Heart Parish celebrated the first mass of the Burkburnett Church in the town hall. In July 1967, Fr. Patrick M. Scanlan was appointed resident pastor and in November, the mission parish was named Holy Redeemer. From the December 31, 1967 church bulletin, Fr. Scanlan announced:

"At long last the contract for the construction of the church-parish hall has been signed by the Bishop. The E.B. Burton Construction Company will begin work soon. In one sense we are witness to the culmination of much worry and work. The new building will stand as a monument to the inspired labor and undaunted efforts of the Catholics of Burkburnett. Their hopes and dreams will now become a reality."

On January 10, 1968 members broke ground for the new church building and the first mass was celebrated on July 28. Construction continued in 1969 with the completion of the bell tower, the parking lot, and the purchase of a mobile home to serve as a rectory. Bishop John Cassata of Fort Worth Diocese conducted dedication ceremonies on the feast day of St. Jude Thaddeus, October 28, 1969.
On February 1, 1981 the congregation gathered for the burning of the church's mortgage and the groundbreaking for the parish hall located south of the parking lot.
In 2003 parishoners conducted a capital campaign to finance a two-part building project. Phase one, the Religious Education Center was completed and dedicated in January 2004. Plans continue for phase two, as we look forward to the renovation and repair of the main church building.
